Getting started
How do I set up my family?
On one grown-up's phone, open RoadTripKit and tap Start a new family car. Add the kids and grown-ups, give each kid a level, and set the codes. It's easiest at home before you leave, so you can plan the route on Wi-Fi.
Should we use the app or the browser?
Either, and they work together in one car. The browser version plays every game with built-in questions and stories. The iPhone and iPad app adds AI-written trivia for every state, new Mad Libs, personal hot-seat questions and storybook chapters. If anyone in the car uses the app, what the AI writes shows up on every device in the car.
How does another phone or tablet join?
Tap Join a car and type the 6-character car code, or point your camera at the grown-up's QR code to open the invite link. A grown-up can find the code, the QR code and an invite link to send in grown-up mode under Family & devices. On an iPhone or iPad with the app, typing the code in the app keeps you in the app (the QR code and links open the browser version for now).
Can kids share one device?
Yes. Each player taps their own face on the "Who's playing?" screen and enters their code. Points always go to whoever is signed in.
Codes
A kid forgot their code
A grown-up opens Family & devices, taps the kid, and sets a new code. Little ones can switch to a 4-picture code.
A grown-up forgot their parent code
Another grown-up in the car can reset it the same way. If you're the only grown-up, email us with your car code and we'll help.
Someone has our car code who shouldn't
In Family & devices, tap New code. The old code and old invite links stop working right away. Devices already in the car stay in; to take one out, tap Remove this device from the car on that device. If you don't have it, delete the car and start a new one.
On the road
Do we need a signal?
Not for most games. License plates, Bingo, ABC Hunt, the puzzles, Mad Libs and Tic-Tac-Toe against the robot work offline, and everything syncs when you're back in range. Live games need the devices to be connected. In the app, download trivia packs for your route before you leave, in grown-up mode under Plan trip; with no signal, trivia uses built-in questions.
State lines aren't being noticed
Automatic state lines run on one device. In Co-pilot, tap Turn on on that device, and allow location when asked. Keep RoadTripKit open on it (a tablet or phone on a charger works well). If you said no to location before: in the iPhone app, turn it on in Settings under Privacy & Security, Location Services, RoadTripKit; in a browser, allow location for the site in the browser's site settings. You can always tap Crossed into… instead.
How do I lock the driver's phone?
In Co-pilot, tap Set this up on the driver's phone on the driver's phone. Its games sit behind an "Eyes on the road" screen that won't unlock while GPS shows the car moving. Location needs to be allowed on that phone for the moving check to work.
We're driving home
At the last state on your route, tap Head home. The route flips for the drive back, each state gets a "welcome back" stamp, and plates, Bingo and ABC Hunt carry on.
Starting a new trip
In Plan trip, tap Clear the boards for a new trip. The route, plates, Bingo cards, ABC Hunt and trip story reset, and everyone keeps their points.
AI questions and stories
In the iPhone and iPad app, fresh trivia, Mad Libs, hot-seat questions and story chapters are written by Claude, an AI model from Anthropic. The browser version doesn't use AI. If something is wrong or not right for kids, email us what it said and which game it was in. The privacy policy lists exactly what's sent to write them.
Deleting your data
To delete your family's car for every device: open grown-up mode, go to Family & devices, and tap Delete this car for everyone. It's removed from our server right away and can't be undone. You need a signal to do this.
To take just one device out of the car, tap Remove this device from the car on it (in grown-up mode, under Family & devices), or delete the app. The car stays for everyone else.
Can't open the app? Email roadtripkit@springmillai.com with your car code and we'll delete the car for you.
Devices
RoadTripKit runs on iPhone and iPad, and in the browser on Android phones and tablets, Chromebooks and computers. Everything works together in one car, whichever device each person has.
